Greenwashing: How to Tell the Difference and the End of Vague Promises

Have you noticed how everything on supermarket shelves seems to have become “eco-responsible,” “green,” or “good for the planet”? Between the brown cardboard packaging, little leaf icons, and ecological promises in every aisle, it’s becoming difficult to separate truth from fiction.

To better understand the mechanics of greenwashing (or the art of appearing “greener” than one really is), let’s see how to have a clearer view.

The Three Faces of Deception

Greenwashing isn’t always a blatant lie, those are rarer and legally actionable. More often, it’s subtle manipulation. Experts generally categorize it into three tactics:

  1. The Context Trap: Highlighting a tiny positive detail while ignoring the bigger picture. Think of a major retailer touting ten organic items while 99% of their inventory relies on conventional, high-impact agriculture.
  2. Visual and Verbal Exaggeration: Using hyperbolic language (“saving the planet!”) or excessive green imagery to mask a heavy environmental footprint. The vibe is eco-chic; the reality is questionable.
  3. Vague Assertions: Relying on undefined terms like “natural” or “eco-friendly” without scientific backing or specific data.
What is changing in Europe

Faced with citizens’ loss of trust, the European Union voted for the EmpCo Directive (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition). By September 27, 2026, new strict rules will govern brand communication:

  • The end of vague slogans: Goodbye to catch-all words like “eco-responsible,” “eco-friendly,” or “good for the planet.” From now on, if a brand uses this type of term, it will have to prove certified environmental excellence or specify exactly why (for example: “packaging made of 100% recycled cardboard” rather than “green packaging”).
  • The ban on artificial “carbon neutral”: A company will no longer be able to claim that a product is “carbon neutral” or “zero emission” based simply on carbon offsetting (such as tree planting). Only real reduction of impacts at the source counts.
  • Cleaning up the jungle of labels: With over 200 visual markers on the market approximating a label near or far, the consumer gets lost. Only labels based on public or independent certification systems will be authorized; self-certifications will be banned.

Why This Matters Beyond Compliance

Critics might call this bureaucratic overreach, but there’s a deeper logic at play: restoring trust. When consumers can no longer decipher which products are genuinely sustainable, they stop caring—or worse, they feel manipulated. Rigorous standards force honesty. They push companies to move from cosmetic gestures to operational change.

For retailers and producers, this is a challenge, but also an opportunity. Those who invest in transparent supply chains, rigorous data tracking, and genuine sustainability efforts will stand out in a crowded market. The directive rewards precision. It punishes laziness.

No product is perfectly zero-impact. Acknowledging that complexity is crucial. Leading brands are moving away from claiming perfection and toward demonstrating progress. Transparency tools, clear metrics, and open dialogue about areas for improvement are becoming the new currency of credibility.

The era of shouting “we love the planet!” from the top of the billboard is ending. The future belongs to those who can show their work.

For consumers, this is a relief. You no longer need to be an expert in environmental science to make informed choices. The regulations are designed to ensure that the information on the shelf is accurate, verifiable, and meaningful.

Ultimately, that’s what the transition needs: not more noise, but clearer signal.

The best way to shop with peace of mind remains choosing places and distribution networks that share global values of transparency.

Join the Veganuary Challenge and Kick-off the Year with Kindness

As the calendar flips to a new year, would you consider joining millions of people around the world on a journey to a kinder living? One of the most transformative and inspiring initiatives leading this charge is Veganuary – a global movement that invites individuals to try vegan for the month of January and beyond.

Veganuary, with over a million participants from diverse backgrounds and dietary preferences, is not just for hardcore vegans but it’s also for anyone curious about the benefits of plant-based living.

After one month of a plant-based diet, many participants from previous years have chosen to stay vegan, while others have significantly reduced their consumption of animal products – a testament to the initiative’s lasting impact.

Why Consider Veganuary?

  1. Health Benefits: Adopting a plant-based diet can lead to numerous health improvements, including better heart health, weight management, and increased energy levels. Many participants report feeling more vibrant and healthier after just a month of plant-based eating.
  2. Environmental Impact: Animal agriculture is a significant contributor to environmental issues such as deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. By choosing plant-based foods, you can reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable planet.
  3. Animal Welfare: For those concerned about animal rights, reducing or eliminating animal products from your diet is a powerful way to take a stand against animal cruelty and support more humane food systems.

Overcoming Doubts

It’s natural to have reservations about making dietary changes. Here are some common concerns and how to address them:

  • “I don’t know what to cook.” You can find some ideas in one of my previous post on simple meals. In addition, the Internet, YouTube and many Instagram influencers offer a wealth of resources, including meal plans, and recipes. On the Veganuary website you can download a celebrity cookbook to make your culinary journey enjoyable and straightforward. In you prefer books, go to your favourite bookshop and you will find ideas and inspirations there.
  • “I’m worried about missing out on nutrients.” The Veganuary website provides nutrition tips to ensure you maintain a balanced and healthy diet throughout the challenge.
  • “I don’t want to do it alone.” By joining Veganuary, you become part of a global community. You’ll receive daily coaching emails and can connect with others taking the pledge, offering mutual support and encouragement.

Take the Leap

The Veganuary challenge is not about perfection but about making a positive change, no matter how small. Even if you decide not to continue a fully plant-based eating style after January, the experience can provide valuable insights into your habits and the impact of your choices.
