This covert operation ensured that the artwork faced no risk. Two vigilant assistants stood by, ready to evacuate the painting at the slightest hint of danger. I recently read Peter Wohlleben’s captivating book “The Hidden Life of Trees“. Wohlleben believes trees talk to each other. Isn’t it fascinating? The world of forests unveils the extraordinary inner workings of these natural wonders. The author explains how trees interact, communicate, move, and defend themselves. He also describes their growth patterns.

From his words, we discover a profound truth: the silent, hidden trees that spend years in the shade foster a resilience that withstands the tests of time. Like whispered secrets shared among the ancient forest, these trees teach us patience and fortitude. Meanwhile, those that hastily reach for the sun find themselves vulnerable to decay, their fleeting growth unable to withstand the rigors of existence.

In nature, we find wisdom – a timeless reminder that endurance often lies in the shadows. Limited sunlight results in slow growth, leading to the development of dense wood that lasts for generations.

On the contrary, trees constantly exposed to the sun rapidly grow, producing porous wood susceptible to fungi, yeasts, molds, and mildew. A tree that quickly grows decays faster and never gets the chance to age.

Exploring the Minsky Moment: Lessons from a Very Funny Coyote and Financial Instability

In the middle of a desert, a somewhat foolish coyote chases after a remarkably cunning bird, their pursuit escalating to breakneck speeds.

Then, abruptly, the bird halts at the edge of a precipice. Yet, the coyote, driven by instinct, continues its sprint heedlessly until it comprehends the futility of its strides – it finds itself suspended in mid-air.

This iconic scene is not merely the antics of Bee Beep and the coyote; it encapsulates a profound economic theory: the hypothesis of financial instability.

Hyman Minsky posited that within every period of economic prosperity lies the seeds of a future crisis. How so? The explanation is deceptively simple. During times of prosperity, economic agents — be they households, businesses, or the state — act with optimism. They borrow funds to fuel projects, investments, and expansion.

Amidst this optimistic climate, investors embrace higher risks; banks extend credit more liberally, often overlooking the perils of repayment. Minsky termed this phenomenon the “paradox of tranquility.”

However, as the economy becomes increasingly dependent on credit, ominous signs emerge: unemployment rises, economic growth falters, incomes shrink, and repayment becomes arduous. Yet, economic actors persist in their illusion of stability, akin to the hapless coyote suspended in mid-air.

A mere whisper of adversity can catalyze the “Minsky moment”: a sudden awakening to the perils of excess. Panic ensues as the realization dawns that risks are untenable, debts are insurmountable, and credit dries up.

The result? A systemic crisis: the coyote, too preoccupied to grasp its impending fall, plunges into the abyss. Such is the saga of financial instability in the real world.

Living the Day

During these challenging moments, I would like to share with you a paragraph taken from John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath”, which embodies strength and courage, and reflects a profound observation about the differences in perspective between men and women, especially in times of hardship and the passage of time.

Steinbeck is known for the realism of his novels and for the humor that enriches his descriptive narratives. Through his storytelling, he paints a vivid portrait of a vanishing America, yet his works remain infused with a resilient hope in humanity’s capacity for renewal and revival. He also captures the resilience of the human spirit and the different ways in which individuals perceive and respond to life’s challenges.

Our life ain’t over. It ain’t, and that’s the thing a woman knows.

I noticed that.

See man, he lives in a jerk.

Baby born, man dies, that’s a jerk.

Gets a farm and loses his farm, and that’s a jerk.

Woman, it’s all one flow, like a stream.

Little eddies, little waterfalls,

but the river, it goes right on.

Woman looks at it like that.

We ain’t gonna die out.

People are going on.

Changing a little maybe, but going right on.

Everything we do, seems to me, is aimed at going on.

It seems that way to me.

Even getting hungry, even being sick.

I think that this passage highlights the resilience and adaptability of humanity. Despite hardships, people persevere and keep moving forward. The narrator emphasizes the cyclical nature of life and the innate human drive to survive and endure, even in the face of hunger, sickness, and death.

Primarily, it beckons as a personal odyssey, inviting you to conquer your own limits, experiment with your habits, and cultivate a keen awareness of your sugar intake. Reflecting on my personal journey with the challenge, the initial week posed formidable frustrations. Yet, the subsequent weeks brought forth an array of rewards:

  • Reduced inclination towards snacking, thanks to prolonged satiety.
  • An exponential surge in energy levels.

The surge in energy is particularly noteworthy and deserving of special attention. After a sugar-free month, I felt replenished with vitality. This resurgence was a rejuvenating tonic, especially after a period of intense work preceding a well-deserved break.

However, it’s important to exercise caution and avoid always demonizing all forms of sugar. Curtailing added sugar intake is pivotal for health, yet the occasional indulgence should not be shunned. Savouring a slice of cake on a leisurely Sunday afternoon with friends becomes a delightful respite —nourishing both mood and overall well-being.

Basically, self-care remains paramount. The challenge’s summons is not about perfection but about fostering a deeper bond with oneself.

What Is the Meaning of Resilience?

What is the meaning of resilience?

Let’s see the meaning of the word as it is found on the Merriam-Webster:

resilience

1 : the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress

2 : an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

After witnessing or being a victim of a traumatic event, such as a terrorist attack, war, flood, fire, the loss of a dear relative or friend, an ordeal may begin for people. In the months following the event, people find themselves silent, stunned, they review the same terrifying images and feel unable to return to a normal life. Yet, after a relatively short time, one year for example, more than 50% of these people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) feel better.  Some individuals possess amazing abilities to overcome difficulties and return to their original, or even mentally stronger, state. This process can be defined as “resilience“.

Why are there people who are more resilient than others?

In some cases resilience is partly innate. The concentration of cortisol (the stress hormone) drops faster. It is estimated that 85% of the population has genetic predispositions to defend themselves from traumas. Another determining factor is the healthy environment in which they grew up. Emotional security during early childhood provides better self-esteem and helps to better overcome difficulties. 

In addition, the support of family and friends is also crucial. Some studies on the state of memory after traumatic events revealed that when survivors were left on their own, the chances of reacting with resilience were lower, while when they were well surrounded, they had a good chance of overcoming the situation they were facing.

So how could you help the victims?  

You could reassure them, speak to them with affection, as you would do with a child. In fact, just like children, survivors can no longer manage their emotions, and sometimes they can’t even speak! By protecting them, the stress generated by the traumatic event will gradually be reduced.

A first level of psychological help can be given by establishing a relationship with the person involved by actively listening to them.

Then, you shall assess the needs of this person and establish priority.

However, for a real psychological support it is important to contact a professional, who will be able to give a proper psychological first aid (PFA) and decide on the follow-up to help people regain their vision of the world and ultimately their life.

9 Reasons to Practise Mindfulness

Today we speak a lot about Mindfulness. Do we really know what it is and why it is useful?

Let’s start with a small definition. Mindfulness is a mental training that makes you aware of your actions and bring focus on what you are doing in the present moment. It is a concept taken from Buddhism but it has lost the religious component and it is not limited to meditation, though meditation is part of Mindfulness.

Today’s life is sometime difficult and often very busy. We find ourselves more and more exhausted and breathless. Our mind is forced to focus on several tasks at the same time (the so called multitasking), at the expenses of our mental and physical well-being.

Practising Mindfulness helps us for sure with finding a bit of quietness and copying with events’ life differently, both in the work environment and at personal level. Mindfulness helps us with finding our own human and spiritual intimacy.

Practising regularly Mindfulness has a positive effect on stress and anxiety and it also helps us in developing useful mental skills that build capacity for:

  1. Focus
  2. Mental Clarity and Agility
  3. Collaboration
  4. Creativity and Innovation
  5. Emotional Intelligence
  6. Empathy and Compassion
  7. Resilience
  8. Happiness
  9. Overall Well-Being.

Try a simple exercise: eat slowly a fruit, trying to taste it fully, to understand the consistency and find out the feelings it gives you. If you eat like that once a day, you will be on the good path for being mindful!
